Cyberwellness 1 - Cyber Addiction (Pupils' Response)

My favourite computer game is from facebook and is called Restaurant City.I usually play computer games only on weekends and only play it for 45 minutes altogether a day. I can prevent Cyber Addiction by not playing games everyday play them on weekends only or 3 days a week only.

I would advice my friend who is a game addict to stop playing games everyday and when we are almost going to take examinations. Play games only when he has finished his homework and on weekends after examinations.

Pupils' Response 19 - Effects of Preventive Measures on Pupils

I think that temperature-taking is good and fun but, no assembly in the hall, cancellation of remedial lessons, CCA and other activities is not fun at all and we won't learn anything more. Without high achievers, my results have dropped.

I find the school less interesting now because we don't have assembly and don't learn anything more.My relationship with my friends and teachers aren't affected. I do assessments, watch TV and take naps.

Our Family Trip to Chiangmai

During the school holidays, my family and I went to ChiangMai. I was very excited as I thought that it would be cooler and we would be going with my cousins' family too . We got to sit on private buggies to get to the boarding gate. At Jet Quay terminal, we were treated like V.I.Ps. We got to sit on OSIM massage chairs and also had snacks and drinks served to us.

During the flight to ChiangMai, my brother and I played with our DS Lites. This time, we did not puke like the trip to Japan because Mummy made us take airsick pills. When we reached Chiangmai, we had to queue up to clear immigration. After that we went to collect our luggage.

A coach was waiting for us when we cleared customs. It took us to Shangri-la Hotel where we were welcomed with cocktail drinks and wet towels. My brother and I shared a room with my Grandpa and cousin. We went for lunch and did some shopping after that. Mummy bought us new shoes which we wore immediately. We also played games at an arcade and bought mango sticky rice. Their mango sticky rice was delicious! That night, we went for a Khantoke dinner which was their traditional Thai dinner with people dancing and performing throughout the meal.

The next day, we went to a temple on top of a hill. I took many pictures there. There were many rows of bells. The guide told us that people ring the bells for good luck and blessings. I rang the bells one by one. Then, we went for lunch at a restaurant called "Mushroom Suki". The restaurant served many different types of mushrooms.
We went to the Saa Paper Factory after lunch to see how people made the paper from tree bark. We tried to pound the bark. It was all done by people and not machines. They made umbrellas, fans and many things from the paper. We wanted to do some umbrella painting after that but the artists did such a good job of painting the pictures, so we asked Auntie Gerri to pay them to draw the pictures for us. We each chose an umbrella and a picture for the artist to paint. That night, we went for dinner at a traditional thai restaurant next to a river. The food was good.

On the third day, we went to Chiangrai. On the way to Chiangrai, we watched a few Thai shows on DVD. Although they didn't have subtitles, we were able to understand them because they had simple stories. They were all very funny. When we reached Chiangrai, we went to the white temple. We went to the coffee shop nearby to eat lunch. Mummy bought many packets of pig skin. The whole family shared 1 packet during lunch and it was very good! But Mummy said we shouldn't eat too much of it because it's too fattening and unhealthy. After that, we went to the opium museum in the golden triangle. It was very educational and interesting to learn about the history of opium and how people were addicted to it like a drug. The guide told us that it is now illegal and the people who used to be part of the illegal work were all given new jobs to help them do legal work.

We went to the border town between Myanmar and Thailand after that, but Daddy stayed on the coach because my younger brother was asleep. We walked around and took some photos. Mummy bought some t-shirts for all of us. For dinner, we were so tired, we ordered room service.
The next day, we went to see tigers. We ate at the restaurant there. After lunch, we went to the long neck village. We had to go in a pick-up truck because the coach was too big to take us up to the village. We saw women with the brass rings around their necks. The guide said they didn't really have long necks. They looked that way because the rings pushed their shoulders down over time. We took many photos.

We went Go-Karting after that. I fell many times but I was brave enough to continue, but I had to stop after I crashed and overturned while racing with my cousin, brother and Daddy. I cried because I got a giant cut on my arm, many painful scratches and also injured my left hand and wrist. It was fun, though.

On the last day, we went shopping, had lunch and went to the airport. We had to
queue up to clear immigration. Then we boarded the aeroplane. Back at the Singapore airport, we were welcomed by buggies that brought us back to Jet Quay terminal to wait for our luggage to be collected for us.

We were very happy to be back home. We came back with many souvenirs, toys and snacks. My older brother and I slept until 12pm the next day!

Pupils' Response 18 - SA1 Results

The SA1 papers have tested us fairly.
All the papers were about the work we did with our teachers.
I don't think I did well this semester because I did not work hard enough. I feel I could have done better.
I think the enrichment classes in school were useful, but I think I would like more homework so that I can have more practice.
I don't have home tuition, but my Mummy helps me in my work. I did not cooperate with her this semester, so Mummy said she would leave me to see if I could get good results by myself. I would like Mummy to continue helping me so that I know my mistakes and can improve.
I will work harder and pay more attention to my homework. I will also do more assessments for my Mummy to check. I must also tell myself not to be too proud of my previous results and to continue to work hard.
I would like more practice and worksheets so that I can do better.

Pupils' Response 17 - H1N1 Flu

Influenza A - H1N1 is a kind of flu that people also call swine flu.
Influenza A - H1N1 is spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza A- H1N1. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with influenza A germs on it and then touching their mouth, eyes or nose.
Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, China, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, India and Vietnam are the asian countries that are affected .
They can check for imported cases at the airports and other immigration checkpoints to quarantine cases before they come into contact with the locals. If there is local spread, they can educate people and ask them to be more responsible.
I think the taking of temperature is effective in preventing Influenza A H1N1, because when people know their temperatures, they will know whether they have a fever or not and can seek treatment quickly.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the litter bin after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Hand sanitizers are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.

A) 5 things I know or learnt about H1N1 flu.
1. U.S.A has the most cases of H1N1 flu
2. U.S.A also has the most number of deaths caused by H1N1 flu.
3. Singapore has 1003 cases of H1N1 flu.
4. Indonesia has the least number of cases.
5. H1N1 flu started in Mexico.

B)5 things I learnt from the 3 videos.
1. The correct way to wash our hands.
2. Do not eat food that you had dropped on the floor.
3. Wash our hands before eating.
4. Do not share food with others using the same fork or spoon.
5. We must wash our hands after playing in the playground.

Pupils' Response 16 - Kindness

Kindness is a way you can show people you care for them. It is important to be kind to other people because when you are kind to other people, you will make them happy. And when you are kind to someone, they will be kind to you too.

People can show their kindness by helping other people before they ask that person to help them. eg. sweeping the floor for their mother, washing the dishes for their mother, etc.

I have shown many acts of kindness such as sweeping the floor, carrying books for teachers, washing the dishes, etc. I was happy after I did those kind things.

I can be kind to everybody in the whole world.

Pupils' Response 15 - Classroom Cleanliness

I think my classroom is clean as many of my classmates sweep the floor every day.
I think it is important to keep the classroom clean as it will let us study in a clean environment.
We can keep our classroom clean every day by sweeping the floor every day.
I have participated in sweeping the floor, emptying the basket and cleaning the whiteboard.
I have learnt that we should keep the earth clean and green.
I have learnt excellence, sincerity, passion and self-discipline from the classroom cleaning activity.

Pupils' Response 14 - Earth Day

Earth Day is important to me, because Earth is my home planet and I love Earth a lot. Without the Earth, all living things will die. So, we must protect the Earth and the living things on it.

The Earth is dying because human beings are destroying it slowly, over many, many years. We are over-using the Earth's resources and not allowing it to renew fast enough. We are also polluting the environment and the air around us. That's why we have to "save the Earth" by stopping all the polluting and littering.

When we recycle, we make new things out of old things. This means that with the same amount of material used, we can do many more things with it. For example, trees are cut to make paper. After using the paper, we can recycle and make more paper. This means we do not have to cut down more trees. When we reuse, we make use of the same thing again and not waste it by throwing it away. For example, plastic bags can be reused again. Water for bathing can be used for watering plants or washing toilets. When we reduce the amount of electricity we use, we use less and save resources.

For "Earth Day", my family and I can try to use less electricity and water. We can also use hand-powered torchlights to find our way around the house. We can have fun and save the Earth as well!

Pupils' Response 13 - International Friendship Day

We celebrate International Friendship Day to spend time with their friends and express love for them by exchanging International Friendship Day Gifts like flowers, cards and wrist bands.

The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends began in US in 1935. Gradually International Friendship Day became popular and today International Friendship Day is celebrated in many countries.

A.S.E.A.N stands for Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

I do not know a lot about A.S.E.A.N but there was one time in school that they taught us about the asean countries.

I like the activities organized by the school on International Friendship Day, because they are very interesting and we get to try new things.

I have 2 friends from 2 different A.S.E.A.N countries. They were our tour guides when we went to Japan and Thailand.

The school can organize exchange programmes with other A.S.E.A.N countries or have contests to test students' knowledge about other A.S.E.A.N countries. This way, we can learn more about other A.S.E.A.N countries and their culture. We can also have penpals whom we can write to and develop friendships with.

Pupils' Response 12 - Improving the School

I like the canteen, library and the areas with computers, because in the canteen you can eat, in the library you can read and borrow books and in the areas with computers, we can use the computers to blog, do work, etc.

I do not dislike any areas of the school, because I like the school just the way it is.

For the library, the school can add more books. For the canteen, the school can add more stalls with more interesting and healthy food. For the areas with computers, the school can leave it the way they are because I feel that they are good enough.

Pupils can help in the improvements by going for more fund-raising activities the school organizes, and also getting their parents to contribute and help the school.

Pupils' Response 11 - Healthy Eating

To stay healthy, we must eat healthy food like salads, fish, fruits and vegetables, such as vegetable salads, fruit salads, steamed fish, cabbages and oranges. If you eat things like ice-cream and sweets, you may get sick and may also get tooth decay. So in order not get sick so often, you must not eat too much ice-cream or sweets. Some diseases you can get eating unhealthy food are "Hand-Foot-And-Mouth Disease", "Food Poisoning", "Stomach Flu" and "Mad Cow Disease".

If you eat healthy food, you will not get sick so often and you will not get diseases like those I mentioned earlier. I like to eat fruits but I don't really like to eat vegetables because fruits are sweet but vegetables have no taste or they might taste bitter.

I support the school's campaign in encouraging pupils to eat more fruit and vegetables because eating fruits and vegetables is very healthy. I can suggest a competition to eat healthy food, like fruit and vegetables. The canteen can also sell healthier food and not sell aerated or sweet drinks. Pure fruit juice without added sugar can also be sold so that students don't keep drinking sweet drinks. Pupils will get more used to eating fruit and vegetables after the competition, and will eat more fruits and vegetables even at home.

For more information, you can go to the HPB website.

Pupils' Response 10 - Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a world wide event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund. Every year, it is held on the last Saturday of March. Households and businesses are asked to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour.

Earth Hour was held at 8.30pm, Saturday 28th March 2009 in Singapore.
The event is to raise awareness about global warming, environmental disasters, and climate change. If world leaders agree to take part in the event, more people will be more interested in protecting the earth and not wasting energy.

Thousands of people in Singapore switched off their lights for an hour during Earth Hour 2009. Both individuals at home and organisations participated. Many parts of Singapore were in total darkness until 9.30pm. Some hotels in the Marina Bay area also switched off their lights at 8.30pm.

My family and friends can have candle-light dinners, light tea-lights in the house to appreciate the natural light and walk around the bungalow, condominium, HDB flat or terrace house with candles that are lit.

Some problems are global warming, food shortage, life style getting costlier, people littering and air pollution. Don't litter!

Pupils' Response 9-Track and Field Day

I did not attend Anderson Primary School's Sports Day because I was tired and wanted to stay at home. Sports Day would be more interesting if the spectators could participate in some activities. Most of the time, we can only cheer for the students who represent our teams. After a while, it becomes boring just sitting there.

I think engaging in sports is important and useful. Our bodies need some exercise to be healthier. It is also fun because we can try all sorts of different things. My parents say that we should not just stay at home all day and study or play with computer games or the xBox or our DS Lites. It is important to get the body moving and also to get some sun.

I wrote about the sports I engage in when I wrote the blog on "Outside School Activities". Every Monday and Thursday nights, my elder brother and I attend Taekwondo training. We have attained Poom belt status. It is the junior black belt for those who are under 15 years old. When we reach 15 years old, we can take the grading exam to get the adult black belt. We enjoy going for Taekwondo lessons on Thursdays because we get to do more sparring and practise our kicks. We also like being treated with respect because we are now more senior than most of the students. I hope to continue to improve so that I can join competitions soon.

We attended in-line skating lessons in February every weekend. This was fun. We have stopped the lessons for a month so that we can practise on our own before attending the higher level lessons to learn new tricks. I can skate on my own now, but I hope to get more stable and confident. I like the feeling of being on wheels, although I don't like to fall. I fell once and hurt my tail-bone. It was painful for quite a few days.

Daddy also brings us kayaking sometimes. My elder brother and I take turns kayaking with Daddy. The first time I tried it, I was afraid because I couldn't swim then, but Daddy encouraged me and I liked it after that. Sometimes, the shop-keeper gets lightning warnings, and we cannot rent the kayak and go out kayaking because it is dangerous. We have to wait for the lightning warning period to be over first.

Daddy also plays badminton with us sometimes when we go to my grandfather's house. We are still not very good at it.

I attend swimming CCA on Fridays. Mummy sometimes brings us to the pool at our condo for us to swim as well. I like to swim with my brother. I hope to get better at swimming so that I can swim laps to show Mummy. She says it's important for us to learn swimming so that she has 4 people to save her if she is in danger of drowning because she can't swim.

I think our school is doing some things to encourage us to participate in sports. I like how our P.E. lessons have lessons for different sports. This is how I learnt more about in-line skating and wanted to learn more after the P.E. lessons stopped. Maybe the school can also get discounts for some sports for us. For example, if the school can get discounts for in-line skating gear and lessons, or for swimming coaches, etc, more people will find it easier to try out different types of sports.
